Valley Fairtrade
You
can join many other people in the Chew Valley who support
the producers of quality food and crafts by shopping ethically
to make a real difference to the lives of people such
as Juliet of the Igara Co-operative.
Juliet
is a tea grower in Uganda. Due to people like you buying
Teadirect, her village was able to build a 4-bed maternity
unit and end the 40km journey on a stretcher for any problem
pregnancies which were nearly always fatal for mother
and baby alike. They were able to provide pens and paper
for their school children for the first time. They also
have easier access to water through a newly dug water
well within the village boundary.
Small changes to your shopping habits could bring massive
results. So join the Box Scheme
now.
We will donate 10% of all sales (on orders over £10
per month) to charities who work in partnership with people
in developing countries:
Traidcraft Exchange
- working with producers to promote Fairtrade and campaigning
for fairer trade practices.
CAFOD - The overseas
development agency of the Catholic Church in England and
Wales.
Christian Aid
- Agency to the UK churches working wherever the need
is greatest.
We were able to give over £300 in the year ending
April 2003
What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade means that producers of foodstuffs, crafts or
clothes are paid a fair price for their labours. Guaranteed
prices are paid at 10% or more above current world market
rates so that they have protection against changes in
market conditions and so that families and communities
can afford to invest in healthcare and education which
would be otherwise impossible. It also ensures that
workers have decent working conditions and are not exploited
by large international corporations for profit.
Where
do the goods come from?
The
goods come from all over the world and are supplied
to us by Traidcraft Plc a company set up as a Christian
response to world poverty and The Day Chocolate Company
which supplies a range of fairly traded chocolate. Have
a look at the latest Traidcraft catalogue and see what
a wide range of items there are from many different
countries.
Who
are Valley Fairtrade Ltd?
We
are a small company set up to promote Fairtrade in
South Bristol and the Chew Valley area. We act as a
key contact for Traidcraft in this area and help and
support others who sell Fairtrade goods at church stalls,
coffee mornings and charity events. We also have the
support of several volunteers in different parts of
the area. Valley Fairtrade Ltd does not pay any remuneration
or dividends to anyone, any (small) profits are used
to spread the message of Fairtrade.
What
services does Valley Fairtrade provide?
Firstly
we are able to provide a simple, local service for small
or large occasional orders of Fairtrade goods. Items
shown in the catalogue for sale in multiple quantities
can be purchased in individual units and local delivery
can be arranged within the South Bristol and Chew Valley
area. Minimum order is only £5.
For
supporters who are able to commit themselves to a regular
monthly order of at least £5, and who live in
South Bristol or the Chew Valley, we offer the Valley
Fairtrade Box Scheme. You provide us with your
regular order (which can be altered, or added to in
any month) and we will deliver your box to you. In return
for your commitment, we will donate 10% of your order
value (if over £10) to charities (currently split
equally between CAFOD, Christian Aid and Traidcraft
Exchange) which work with people in the third world
in providing for the basic needs of those who are the
most disadvantaged in our world. Last year £250
was donated as a result of this scheme.
For
supporters who would like to promote Fairtrade goods
at their church, school, coffee mornings, clubs, societies,
fund-raising events or who are already Traidcraft Fairtraders, we can provide a wide range of food, cards,
gifts on sale or return. All items are priced and listed
for you and all you have to do is collect, man the stall
and return the items with the proceeds. Again a 10%
discount on list prices is offered for charitable and
fund-raising events and the profit you make can go towards
the cause. We also provide materials for and assist
with talks, displays and quiz's to increase awareness
of the issues of Fairtrade.
I
hope you enjoy browsing through the catalogue, you will
see what a wide range of quality products there are
from all over the world. Your order, large or small,
will be making a real difference to the lives of hard-working
people who would otherwise be denied the opportunities
which we take for granted. We look forward to hearing
from you.
Yours
sincerely
